<mark style="color:red;">**For your safety**</mark>, it is strongly advised that if an individual is using [Yellow or Red tools/machines](/operation-information/tool-check-off#tool-access-color-system) that at least one other individual is at the facility.

# Future Forge Slack

Chatting at the Forge

## Slack Chat

A very good way to get in touch with other FF members and officers is through the use of a program called [Slack](https://wiki.thefutureforge.org/operation-information/www.slack.com). Slack is a channel-based messaging platform. We currently use it at the Forge to communicate with members, relay messages and announcements and check-in with our fellow members!

## Slack Calls

Do you need to get in touch with a FF member immediately! Use Slack to call them on their phone (assuming they have Slack on their phone).

## Get Access to it

If you are a member at the Future Forge, you should have gotten an email inviting you to join our community slack. If you have not gotten the invite, please send an email to <admin@thefutureforge.org> requesting an invite.

## Channels

Currently we have several channels setup on our Slack. Different channels are for different subjects/ forms of discussion. Here is a list of a few of the channels we have:

* \#announcements - for upcoming announcements from forge directors in regards to meetings and events
* \#ourspace - for updates and discussion about the physical location of the Forge
* \#funstuff - offtopic chatting&#x20;
* \#meetingnotes - notes about recent meetings
* \#toolrequests - members requesting certain tools to increase the tools of the space!

## How to use it?

Simply download the program on either mobile or computer, and slick the invite link that was sent. It will allow you to create a profile and join the default channels. If you want to join other channels that are not the default, look at the left side of the program and click the + sign next to where it says "Channels" and click "browse channels".

# Tool Check-Off

## **Tool Access Color System:**

As a member of the Future Forge, there are all kinds of tools and equipment available to you. In order to utilize it safely and securely, we have a color coding system for each tool's danger and complication levels. Always return the tool to it's proper location, if you are not certain of the proper location ask the FF staff.

![](https://1204970860-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-legacy-files/o/assets%2F-M0YHkrRjy1iiPr7OOo3%2F-M9jRZUvWSJe1a2R0PRX%2F-M9jVYp6wb0tyvymZYKy%2Ftool%20rules.png?alt=media\&token=6fe8d072-818e-4023-9061-85aa0f2d9f0e)

### &#x20;Green Tools:

&#x20;This include things like, hammers, screwdrivers, drills, soldering irons.&#x20;

Green level is the safest and just required use of common sense and following safety guidelines, if you are unfamiliar of anything, just ask around!

### Yellow Tools:

This include most things that plug in an electrical outlet, like sewing machines, saws, drill presses.

Yellow level is an intermediary level in terms of potential dangers or complicated design. If you are a member and know how to use a particular yellow tool, please check in with an officer of a member already checked off on that particular tool to show them that you know what you're doing.&#x20;

If you have never used this tool before, find someone who is available to teach you, and they can check you off.

### Red tools:

&#x20;This includes machines like 3D Printers, Vinyl Cutters, Laser Cutters, Welders, Woodworking machines.&#x20;

Red level is a more advanced level and can be either very complicated or dangerous. if you are a member and know how to use a particular red tool, check in with an officer or an already approved member and show that you know how to use this tool in a pretty comprehensive way.

If you have never used this tool before and would like to be trained in it. Either refer to available upcoming classes on it or visit our Tool Check-Off page and go through the steps of contacting a trainer to setup a time to learn the tool and become oriented in it!

# Safety Guidelines

ALWAYS Be Safe While at the Forge!

## General Shop Safety:

* Always take your time and be focused on your work. There is no hurry!
* Always wear safety glasses, even if you are not using any tools yourself, as chips and debris can fly considerable distances. Prescription eyeglasses are rated as safety glasses, and may be used as such, but remember that they do not protect from the sides unless you add side shields.
* Take off all jewelry, roll up your sleeves and tie back your hair; do not give the machines something to grab hold of.
* Learn where the following things are: Exits, fire extinguishers, first aid kits, electrical switchboxes and cutoff valves. Learn the use of each.
* Never interrupt or distract anyone using power tools, unless you see a safety hazard that the person does not see. If you must get someone’s attention, move into their field of vision and wait for them to notice yo&#x75;**.**
* Inspect any tool or piece of equipment before using it; if there seems to be anything wrong with it, do not use it, and bring it to the attention of someone in charge of maintenance.
* Always ensure that the cutting tools you use are as sharp as possible; this includes sandpaper, which can get clogged or the abrasive dulled with use. The more dull a tool is, the more energy must be used to get it to cut at all, leaving less energy available for control.
* Always remember:  What a tool can do to wood or metal, it can do to your fingers, and usually more easily.  Follow ALL safety rules, and use ALL safety devices. &#x20;
* Though “Do as I say; not as I do” is a Bad Idea generally, if someone is experienced with a tool or process and is over 18, you may see them taking shortcuts that are potentially hazardous. This is still a Bad Idea generally, though experience can substitute for safety devices. But that experience has to be there; if you just got your Learner’s Permit, you would probably not be able to safely drive to San Francisco, which any experienced driver could do. And if you’re under 18, you MUST use ALL relevant safety devices, experience or no.

## Electrical Safety:

* Whenever possible, trip high-capacity electrical switches (i.e., in a switchbox), and plug in and unplug power cords, with your right hand while standing on your right foot. This will prevent possible electrical current from an electrical fault from flowing through your body across your heart.
* Always inspect electrical cords (both power cords attached to equipment and extension cords) before use. If the outer casing is damaged but the wire insulation is intact, wrap the casing in electrical tape before using, and bring it to the attention of someone in charge of maintenance. If wire insulation is damaged, and most especially if conductor is visible, DO NOT USE IT!
* Unplug power cords by pulling on the plug, not by pulling on the cord. Pulling on the cord can pull it right out of the plug.
* If you must use an extension cord, use the shortest and largest-gauge extension cord available. If you have to choose, go for largest-gauge over shortest (remember: wire thickness goes UP as the gauge number goes DOWN – 8 gauge wire is thicker than 10 gauge wire).
* If a power or extension cord becomes hot to the touch, TURN THE MACHINE OFF IMMEDIATELY! If necessary, turn off the power at the switchbox. Then unplug it if you can do so safely.
* Never use anything that uses line electricity if the floor is wet (this does not apply to battery-powered tools).

## Power Tool Safety:

* READ THE MANUAL before trying to operate any unfamiliar power tool; even if it is a sort you have used before, reading the manual will tell you if there is anything unusual about this particular model. The manual is the best source for how to avoid hurting yourself.
* Before turning a power tool on, check to make sure all retaining and adjustment screws/nuts are tight, all locks are unlocked, and all chuck keys or other adjustment tools are removed. Make sure nothing will be in contact with the cutting tool, especially your fingers.
* After turning off a power tool, wait for it to come to a complete stop before making any adjustments or leaving it unattended.
* Try to keep your body parts out of the plane of rotation of a power tool. I have seen an abrasive wheel explode and throw fragments 30 feet, and I have seen a 2X4, fed the wrong way into a table saw, thrown 10 feet to make a half-inch-deep hole in a cinderblock wall.
* Whenever possible, brace the power tool against something other than yourself; this makes controlling it much easier and less tiring. The closer the brace is to the workpiece, the better.

# Procedures

Future Forge Policies for Operation

## Member access to space:

Once a person becomes a member of the space, you have access to the entire main room and smaller side rooms that currently make up the Forge boundaries. New Members can access these spaces during the hours of operation at the Forge, you can find those hours [HERE](https://www.thefutureforge.org/About).

## 24/7 Key card acces&#x73;**:**

Members are entitled to 24/7 access to the forge via RFID keyfob/keycard once they pass these requirements:

1. Be an ***active*** member for at least one month. You must be coming in and using the space regularly enough so that officers and other members can see how you work. *You cannot just sign up to become a member, never come by, and expect to receive 24/7 access after a month.*
2. Follow all the guidelines as outlined by our Procedures, Policies, and Code of Conduct. If you are a new member and failing to follow some of these guidelines, we will not give you more access until this can be rectified or your membership is ended.

## **No Trace Left Behind:**

As members of the Future Forge, it is our responsibility/obligation to create an ethos to keep each of the work areas safe, orderly, and as clean as possible.&#x20;

When you are planning to work on a project always include time for returning tools & equipment that were used to their proper storage location and to clean up any debris from your work on your project.

## How to use them!

In order to use a 3D printer you need some software, at the makerspace we have a few computer with this software on it.&#x20;

The software is called PrusaSlicer and can be downloaded for free [HERE](https://www.prusa3d.com/prusaslicer/).

The process to get 3d printing is to get a 3d model file of some sort. Either by downloading or creating your own. Huge databases of 3d files exist and are worth checking out. [Thingiverse](https://www.thingiverse.com/) is a place to start!

The next step is to load up the model file in PrusaSlicer and "Slice" it. This turns the 3d model into mechanical movement commands that the 3d printer will make in order to make this digital file a physical object.&#x20;

The program then will allow you save the new file it has generated. Put it on an SD Card and plug it into the side of the LCD screen on the Prusa and turn it on and click print from SD card! It should start after it finishes heating up and you should be good to go!

### Tool Description:

The Thickness Planer is typically used after a jointer (surface planer) has created a flat surface on a piece of lumber (or with lumber that has a reasonable flat surface). The planer is used to create a parallel surface (to the jointed surface), it removes small layers, planing, from the top surface of the wood as it passes under the feeding wheel(s) and cutting blades of the planer. The cutting blade height control is manually set before each cut, the lumber being planed is repeatedly passed through the planer removing small (typically <1/16") amounts of thickness with each pass and for creating a piece of wood with a specific thickness/height.

### Tool Description: <a href="#tool-description" id="tool-description"></a>

It is important to know the proper direction to feed the piece being routed; the piece should be fed into the cutting edge of the router bit, the table router bit rotates counter-clockwise.

Router Tables can be used for a couple different ways:&#x20;

1. A fence is used, with the router bit partially emerging from the fence. The workpiece is then moved against the fence, and the exposed portion of the router bit removes material from the workpiece.
2. No fence is used. A template is affixed to the workpiece, and a router bit with a ball bearing guide is used. The ball bearing guide bears against the template, and the router bit removes material from the workpiece so as to make the workpiece the same shape as the template.

**Quorum Achieved**<br>

**Stephen Lindsey, Gabe Farley, Nick Farley, Mary Stone, Wanda Stone, Dylan Miner**

**Stephen calls the board to order at: 4:38pm**<br>

**Major Key Points: Employee Duties (Hourly Cleaning), Makers Market Update (Committee), WOODSHOP!?,**&#x20;

* **Clean up after selves! You work here so clean like it! Also cleaning list! Station Organization! Maintain ALL stations, not just the main areas. Maybe it's time to have “directors” to help keep up with cleaning and station maintenance. Let keep a better eye on our problem areas. Problem: Cleaning and Organizing Stations and Snack Areas Solution: Personal post it board for just our board! This will be separate and PRIORITIZED with written names and dates on each note! Daily kind of basis not long term. Just to dos and notes, not ‘in progress’ or ‘done’.**
* **Makers Market update, ads and logo is getting finished. After today, stuff is going out, so yay! Mary and Charmeine I guess are the leads. Nick and Wanda want to be on the committee. Contact Mary for info.**
* **Policies and Norms - need to be DONE! Call them “Codes of Conduct”: Add to wiki. Incorporate with policies. Send Gabe any information pertaining to these. Also any wiki.**
* **MERCHANDISE LET DO IT! EVERYONE GET SOME IDEAS TOGETHER**
* **Join It Memberships 5% discount for 6 months and 10% for 1 year. Non renewing memberships should not exist. They will all be recurring and we brief our members to cancel their own memberships. THEY say when they would like to cancel membership.**&#x20;
* **Contact Patrick about his non voting membership**
* **Orientation Binder is shared, Everyone have at! We should do a physical walk through**
* **Volunteer Board! Tasks should be listed**
* **Wood Working Room - Working with Stu on new Lease. Committee - Josh?s? Heading it up? Waiting on the lease and the people.**
* **Stephen will take on classes (program planning) and Gabe will take on the wood shop committee. Nick or Wanda -volunteer master?**
* **Hoping to get 3 interns from Aldo! Even other interns from the college? Less limited time**
* **GET THE BIGGEST WAZER**

**Meeting Adjourned by Stephen Lindsey 5:48pm**<br>

# 6-2-2020 Board Meeting Minutes

Board Meeting Minutes

**Board Meeting Minutes -  June 2nd 2020**

**11:50am at Future Forge Makerspace**

**Recorded by Mary Stone**<br>

**Attendance Mary Stone, Gabe Farley, Stephen Lindsey, Nick Farley**

**Guests: Wanda Stone, Tom Farley**

**\*quorum achieved**<br>

**Key Points: Non Voting Board Members, Reopening Info Emails, Public Tours, Makers Market, Orientation, Volunteering, Key Fob System**<br>

* **Patrick - Non voting board member? Could we do that? We would have to update our bylaws to have an extra of 3 non voting board members (bringing the total up to 8) \*we need to fill the 5th Spot and that should maybe be someone outside of our circle so to speak, someone with some resources and “power” so to speak (Dave, Zach??, Patrick?). Non voting board members is a good idea but it means they will be a resource and will provide helpful input still leaving it to our vote though. We should be thorough with our application for board members.**
  * **I think Wanda should be recognized, she has functioned as a full board member**
  * **Adjust bylaws to add up to 3 non voting board members (must be or have been a member?) and must be voted in - Patrick seems to be our first nominee**
  * **That would mean we need Board Insurance, lets get on that.**
  * **Create a list for him to do while volunteering**
* **Reopening to Members? How will we be weaning members back in? We need to be very specific about member and “employee” requirements. Mass mail chimp message and personal members messages about how we will be actively functioning for the time being and have the website reflect this new information. This info needs to include tour days for the public (since we are member only currently) Saturdays.**
* **Do free Eventbrite tours so we can schedule tours and walk throughs for the public (we don't want to do it like this but we kinda have to…) 11am, 1pm, 3pm and 5 or 6 people per tour.**
* **Side note - Aysh update, hes still working on it and needing some help, lets remember that.**
* **Makers Market!! Farmers market will not be utilizing that awesome space so OH WELL guess we're gonna take it over!! Would be an awesome event, Visitors Center and Main Street are excited. We would be hosting this market, put together a committee to run it, get permits and events lined up and begin! (Could advertise to Western and other places for volunteers). Would be essentially the same as the farmers market, they would pay for a booth and that would pay for advertisement. Semi-regular even weekly occurrences, maybe seasonal. Even potentially becoming more often as members can develop and become more established. BIG Committee BIG Deal!! Directly tied to our Makerspace (obviously) people will use our space, we will have our name out there, we will be tied more into the community. It is somewhat competitive, skill wise, throughout our community. LETS MAKE IT HAPPEN!**
  * **Keep in mind a makers fair**
* **Grants - Studio G? Country something? 30Something? Lots of summer grants are coming up! Get More. Use Freeport Money (spend it on classes)**
* **Members with Key Fobs. they can stay before and after hours but need to go through a system or orientation, what would be the qualifiers for earning a fob (qualifiers to get a key fob= going through orientation binder, passing probationary period,?). 10-3 for classes and having the door unlocked (maybe Friday and Saturday 12-7).**
* **Orientation - Create an orientation binder that will have every room and station's tool information. We need to ALL sit down and do it. Add a volunteering list of tasks to the orientation binder.**
* **Volunteering Tasks for Orientation Binder? - Front desk, (does it go by room or by station, does it depend?)**
* **Volunteering - Working front desk would mean that you get a free membership?**
* **Gabe made a volunteering calendar, he needs us to put down in writing what times we will be available to work. Everyone's on Gabe’s google calendar and add your work availability.**

**Stephen: Motion to add 3 non voting members and amend our bylaws PASSED**<br>

**Learning to make a member a key fob.**<br>

**End Notes**

* **Patrick as new non voting board member**
* **Board insurance**
* **Email to Public and Members about reopening info and tours**
* **Markers Market Committee!!**
* **12-7 Fri. and Sat., 10-3 Tues.Wed.Thur.**
* **Learn to do Key Fobs**
* **Create Orientation Binder**
* **Work Out Volunteering Orientation/Tasks**
* **Add your available Hours to Google Calendar**
  * **Tues. Mary and Stephen 10-3**
  * **Wed. Stephen and Wanda 10-3**
  * **Thur. Gabe 10-3**
  * **Fri. Stephen and Nick 12-7**
  * **Sat. Mary and Stephen 12-7**

**Stephen Lindsey Adjourned Meeting at 1:21pm**<br>

# 3-10-2020 Board Meeting Minutes

Board Meeting Minutes

Quarum Achieved

Stephen Lindsey, Gabe Farley, Nick Farley, Mary Stone, Wanda Stone

Stephen calls the board to order at 5:45pm

Major Key Points: Each of Our Roles, Financials, Classes, Sponsorships

\*Classes

Stephen: we need to uphold our roles as board members and really take them on.

Gabe: We need to have more classes, 3D printing and laser cutting should be offered consistently

Classes, are they too often or not often enough.

Nick: Maybe doing 101, 102, then 103 and cycling through

Stephen: \<maybe split classes into two separate classes, maybe theory then hands on. People like to walk away with something from the class, 3D printing is harder to do but maybe laser cut something? Lapidary they could walk away with something so people felt more involved. We are seeing a rise in people's interest in teaching classes and workshops. 3 classes scheduled this month using online form. Pretty cool.

Nick left to check door. 5:52

Gabe: would Stephen be interested in doing 3D printing classes consistently? 101 and 102

Stephen: maybe do alternating 3D printing and Laser Cutting classes

Gabe: People are interested in 102 3D printing. Smaller class but finer detail, maybe even teach together (Stephen and Gabe)

Stephen: good idea

Gabe: sneezes 5:54, we need a welding instructor

Stephen: start calling on all our metal shop working members to help get it together. So many half done stations.

Gabe: need people that are competent and can handle taking on a station. Gets hung up on calling people

Stephen: can call people to help develop stations

Gabe left to find Nick 5:56

Nick and Gabe are back 5:58

Gabe: volunteer thing, we need to get people into the metal area.

Stephen: Develop stations

\*call some people to get stations together (specifically metal)

Wanda: so who's calling people?

Stephen: will call people, (mary) will too

Gabe: gonna set up a time to meet these people we call

Stephen: volunteers

Nick: how can we count up their hours and duties.

Stephen: Who will make a schedule for volunteers?

Nick: He's the volunteer guy

Stephen: maybe there will be a card that you sign to add up hours to distinguish how many hours are being used

Gabe: we should meet with Steve Eike? Recurring classes need to happen. Alternating 3D 101 and Laser 101 then every other week 102s?

Stephen: Need a backlog on the calendar, so we can start LOOKING AHEAD. Alternate classes sometimes in the morning sometimes in the evenings, alternate days. Gabe come up with days and times that are good for you and Stephen will come up with his own as well. Get it going ASAP. Take examples from the Bodgery

Gabe: Monthly Member Meetings and Open Houses need to be recurring as well.

Stephen: Maybe just do open nights, monthly weekend night? 4-7pm. Using more examples from the Bodgery.

Nick: This is where those employee identification type stuff comes in.

\*3rd Friday of Every Month 5-7pm Open Nights

\*1st Friday of Every Month - Monthly Member Meetings 5 or 6-7pm

Stephen: Teach Mary to upload to Wiki.

Gabe likes having a secretary.

Nick: we should do a members market

Gabe: we need to get our shit together first before that

Nick: I think it would help, it pulls people in

Wanda: Its like opening a restaurant then opening a food cart

Stephen: maybe during open nights, people could set up tables and show their skills

Gabe: we should develop stronger first then let it snowball

Stephen: demonstrations will lead up to a market type style, we will incorporate

Gabe: much more do-able, starting a small scale will be less detrimental.

\*Establishing an agenda, MMM, Open Nights, Recurring Classes, Member Led Classes

Stephen: Nina and Ken wanting to do their class $30 per person Saturday, Marci is going to do Kaleidoscope Class,

Nick: how far in advance can we set up classes.

Stephen: backlogging would be huge, we need to have more time

\*Messages will now be sent out bi-weekly, people should be constantly checking and having a backlog will keep people looking into our events

\*Weekly or more often then that Instagram/Facebook posts. Be consistent with posts.

\*Photo consent? We could add that to our registration forms.

Sponsorships, do away with them completely

Gabe: replace with starving artist thing? Still pay a little and the rest is pitched for them. Reduce a membership rate and call it a scholarship.

Stephen: still paying something. In the past, people abused those sponsorships. Have a very thorough screening process.

\*Who and how will this be decided. There has to be a want.

Stephen: Volunteer hour discount

Nick: Slots for volunteers. It should be limited to give us a reason to decline people. Factoring in diversity

Gabe: reduced rates - family, volunteer, scholarship

\*It comes to time logged for the space and spent doing projects.

Gabe: is the volunteer time worth the money for us? If there time is being paid for, why are they putting in extra time at work.

\*3 Scholarships are PARTIALLY funded. write a short reason why we should consider you. Don't need volunteer hours but are required to log MAKING hours.

\*Involved Volunteer Memberships - lanyard, can check off tools for others, required amount of hours, must go through training orientation for tools. 8hrs a month.

\*Non Involved “Simple” Volunteers, no ability to enable others, non-administrative

Nick: We can include this into the criteria needed. Time spent, community driven, etc

Stephen: Sponsors want to know who they are sponsoring.

\*Money simply put is 1. Membership money 2. Donation, scholarship, sponsorship Pool 3. Material Donation

Nick Stephen and Gabe went to investigate a noise 6:45 - Back at 6:47

Gabe will determine where money is pooled. We can have the membership ...

The rock saw was on. Investigation complete. Mission success. 6:48pm

\*$20 a month for scholarships, $0 for volunteers

We all really like the essay idea for scholarships. Maybe volunteers too. It shows drive, effort, focus, etc. Shows that they can do them and won't need us to shadow or guide. Conduct interviews.

Mary: Gabe be ready on join it for these types of memberships.

\*we are coming together on a consensus on the details of volunteering and scholarships. Maybe everyone can start as “Simple” volunteers and can eventually move up because then the orientation and administration can come gradually and you can graduate into either an involved volunteer to a scholarship. We need to keep the

\*We will probably be more inclined to “pitch” for youth.

Stephen: Non Profit stuff is good. Still waiting on CRS to register with city and bank account stuff. Need to turn in 990 for this year. Joe will be in town next Thursday for Attorney General information.

Gabe: Woodshop, Stu wants it clean and reorganized

Stephen: Now is the time to dedicate time towards moving everything we own out of the wood shop. We are not renting that space, so we shouldn't be using it. Committees! Wood shop committee (temporary) to clean and set up. Make an announcement to meet up

Gabe: Grants. Freeport is progressing. Town and Country has been submitted wont hear back until Mid April. 30 Something Grant, we need to finish the application and get it submitted.

\*Lets get that wood shop going and we can utilize this project towards Katz's Grant. Could be Awesome.

Gabe: Looking into another Laser Cutter.

Any last details?

Nick: Lapidary saw?

Stephen: it needs a motor

Nick: it would be nice to have 2 of everything so two members can work on the same station at once.
